Carl Bagnini, MSW, LCSW, BCD, ‘74

Carl chaired a family weekend conference, “Encountering the Slippery Slope in Psychoanalytic Family Therapy,” March 28-30, Salt Lake City, Utah. On March 7th, Carl taught at the Contemporary Institute for Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy in Tampa, Florida on “Symbolic Equation and Therapeutic Technique.” On March 14th, Carl presented a paper, “Retrieving Unprocessed Counter Transference” for the video conference master series, the International Psychotherapy Institute. Carl published an article, “The False Self, the Dead Family, and the Alive Therapist – Changing Ghosts into Ancestors,” in The International Association of Psychoanalytic Family Therapists, an online journal.

Esther Bar-Shair, MSW, LCSW-R, ‘99

Etty is making her debut in the film Beauty Mark as one of the luminaries who are interviewed to speak on the topic of obsession with body image.

Robert Eakin ‘75

Bob, extern, '74 -'75, has closed his Hewlett, L. I. practice. He continues to practice in New York City (100 Riverside Drive). He finds that his early training in both psychodynamic and family systems therapy is ever relevant to today's patient landscape. He welcomes hearing from former colleagues (rgersd@aol.com).

Ellen Fader, LCSW, ‘05

Ellen’s position as Director of Safe Horizon's 9/11 Mental Health Programs recently ended as 9/11 funding ceased. As a result, Ellen has expanded her private practice to fulltime and now has an office on 61st Street between Park and Madison Avenues. Concurrently, she has increased her clinical activities with Ackerman's Center for Families and Health and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Family Focused Grief Treatment research project.

Pamela Filip, MSW, ‘85

Things are going quite well for me personally and professionally. I continue to work with families and couples, and with ongoing training for both. I became a Certified Image Therapist in 2007 and was recently appointed to the rank of Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry for the Social Work Yale School of Medicine, to supervise residents with their couples and family work.

Silvia Giliotti, LCSW, '06

Silvia started to teach Foundations in Family Therapy at Ackerman last year, and maintains a private practice in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with another Ackerman graduate, Andrea Smith. Silvia and Andrea can be reached at (718) 788-1352.

In February 2008, Silvia became the NYS Office of Mental Health Suicide Prevention Coordinator, for NYC and LI. If you would like to learn more about suicide prevention initiatives in New York, visit the brand new OMH suicide prevention Website at http://www.omh.state.ny.us.

In her personal life, she is proud to announce that her daughter, Serena, graduated from college and her son, Stefano, is on his way to college. Sadly, Silvia's mother died one year ago, with her family at her side. She wrote about this experience in a short piece titled "Vigilant", which was recently published by "Family, Systems, & Health" (June 2008, Vol. 26).

Neil presented two workshops on divorce at the APA convention:

Frédéric La Belle, MFA, ‘74

After spending more than 25 years in Montreal (1975-2004), Frederic is now working most of the year in France (Brittany). He has written about his work (book chapters, essays, and conference presentations, all in French), and recently published an article in a refereed journal, Psychotropes, on his experience doing multiple family therapy in a narcotic rehabilitation program in Manhattan (1969-1974). He became a charter member of the American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA) in 1977. In addition to being a clinical member (and for 15 years an Approved Supervisor) of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), he is a clinical member of several American, Canadian, and international group and family therapy associations, including the European Family Therapy Association (EFTA) and the International Family Therapy Association (IFTA).

Laura McCarthy, LCSW, MSW, ‘02

Laura is in private practice on Staten Island specializing in families with emotionally and behaviorally disordered children. She is now expanding her practice to provide Dialectical Behavior Therapy to teens and young adults with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Melissa Mertz, LCSW, SEP, ‘86

Melissa has recently completed a three-year training/certificate program in Somatic Experiencing (SE). This is a short-term, innovative approach to help resolve and heal trauma. Melissa has worked in the field of trauma resolution for more than 25 years and finds SE an invaluable tool in helping people. Melissa also is an avid cyclist and is particularly interested in working with people who have had bike accidents and find they are having symptoms that impede their enjoyment and/or performance on the bike.

Susan Pines, MSW, ‘86

Susan still really enjoys the Ackerman alumnae/i gatherings! She also loves working with families, couples and individuals. She is an EMDR approved consultant and finds that to be extremely rewarding work. She also has trained in EVTFT and CBT. Susan now has two grandchildren who are about to move to California with her daughter and son-in-law. They are all her greatest joy.

Phoebe Prosky, MSW, ‘66

Phoebe presented in Portugal on Zen as a base for advancing family therapy theory and practice in March at the International Family Therapy Association (IFTA) Congress. She also coordinates the Education and Training Division of IFTA.

Mimi Renchner, MSW, MFT, ACSW, ‘82

Mimi has closed her Manhattan office, but maintains a brisk family and individual practice. She is forever grateful for the high quality of training and supervision she received at Ackerman. In her personal life, Mimi is struggling with attending to a very ill mate. Her children and grandchildren are a blessing.

Phil Ross, '87

Phil has opened a second office, this one in North Creek, NY, in the heart of the Adirondacks, where he now spends half his time. He finds great pleasure in serving an area in which therapists are as rare as moose in Manhattan. Carrie Stewart, LCSW, ‘06

Carrie continues to do supervision and counseling at the Center for Family Life in Sunset Park, and has been doing consulting at NYU Law School Family Defense Clinic. Carrie is expecting her first baby this fall!
