Parent Discussion Group
Children with Special Needs
Parent Discussion Groups are being offered to help parents cope with personal
and family stress associated with having a child with special needs. The purpose
is to share the experience with other families, increase social support, expand
healthy coping strategies, and promote satisfying co-parenting relationships and
sense of competence in the parental role.
Some of the themes will include:
- Family beliefs and reactions to your child's disability
- Impact on the marital relationship, siblings, other family members and
daily routines
- Impact on your role as a parent
- Strategies to promote family resilience
Group Leader: Judy Grossman, DrPH, OTR, FAOTA
Dr. Grossman is the Associate Director of the Center for the Developing Child and Family, an occupational therapy and public health educator and consultant to community agencies. She has conducted early intervention and special education policy studies, held a number of academic appointments (currently adjunct associate professor at NYU, formerly Chairperson at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center, Associate Research Scientist at Yale School of Medicine) and published and presented widely. Her family therapy practice is located in NYC (West 68th Street) and Westport, CT.
Day: Tuesday or Wednesday
Dates: Six Sessions - Next group beginning March 4, 2008
Time: Morning and Evening sessions are available
