Gender Differences in Childhood: The Nurture of Nature
Presenter: Martha Edwards, PhD, Director of Ackerman's Center for the Developing Child and Family
Are girls and boys the same or different? If they are different, how different? And what difference
does this really make in what we do as parents? Recent research is demonstrating that there are real
differences between boys and girls—due to genetics, hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, and oxytocin,
that all influence brain structure and behavior.
In this session, we will look at the most current research on gender differences. We will then consider the
implications of these gender differences have for our children's development
and for how we parent them.

Eight in ten parents think that it is much harder to be a parent today than when they were children. But is it? The reality is that although parenting today is challenging, there is also a lot of good news for modern parents. With compassion and clarity, and backed by extensive research, renowned author and parenting expert Debra Haffner examines today’s pressing issues and offers advice about how to develop your own “affirming” parenting style. At this lecture, parents of children of all ages can learn more about how good parenting can make a real difference even in the most challenging circumstances.
