Workshop
Sexual Intelligence: Cybersex, Kinky Sex, Pornography, & “Sex Addiction”
Description
We all have cases now that didn’t exist 20 years ago. Cases increasingly involve sadomasochism, swinging, role-playing, cybersex, and internet porn. Without specific training, therapists are vulnerable to stereotyping and judgments, even taking sides—which can undermine our effectiveness.
The “sex addiction” concept is one clinical response; its structured approach soothes the therapist’s anxiety. But when patients describe themselves as “out of control,” it’s often more powerful to see them as disliking the consequences of their sexual decisions—while rejecting the pain of making different choices. Couples’ conflict over pornography can also be a displacement. Is the conflict really about masturbation? Sexual boredom? Abandonment? Fears of aging? Most couples will do anything rather than talk about such issues. They need us to guide them into these difficult conversations.
Participants will learn to interpret, influence, and treat patients’ sexual decision-making—without stripping sex of its richness and adulthood.
