“So Tell Me About the Last Time You Had Sex…” It’s one of the first questions Ian Kerner asks an individual or couple after learning about the sex issue(s) they want to work on. Every sexual encounter tells a story — with a beginning, middle and end — that is rich with clinical material and ripe for insight.
In this workshop, Dr. Kerner will describe the art and science of the “sex script analysis” – a solutions-oriented way of assessing and guiding treatment, regardless of whether you specialize in sex therapy or just want to better integrate your patients’ sexual concerns into the broader therapeutic alliance. Key themes will include: “rewriting” a patient or couple’s script; sheathing sexual behaviors in an “erotic skin”; learning why the sexual brain needs to not just turn on but also ‘turn off’ in order to enter in a sexual flow state and more.
By understanding your patients’ sex lives in action, and using the here and now as an entry-point into their subjective experience of sex and sexual history, this workshop will not just give you the ability to confidently talk with patients about their sex lives, but to clinically help them do something about it.
Learning Objectives:
- To delineate key aspects of a sex script analysis
- To illuminate how to incorporate psychogenic arousal into a sex script
- To discuss the science of sexual arousal, with an emphasis on neural entrainment
