Upcoming Couples Therapy: A Smorgasbord of What Works and What Doesn’t

There are many ways of doing couples therapy. This talk will not focus on theoretical descriptions of these various approaches and instead, zero in on clinical examples and ways of thinking about couples that lead to a greater chance of positive outcomes. As a result of this training, therapists new to couples therapy will hopefully have greater confidence in their work, and more experienced clinicians will hopefully learn several new ideas that will supplement the work they are already doing.

Learning Objectives:

  • To describe interventions and strategies that lead to satisfactory client outcomes in couples therapy
  • To describe common pitfalls in couples therapy that can contribute to unsuccessful outcomes

Presenter:

Peter Abrons received his PhD in clinical psychology in 1984 from Ferkauf Graduate School in New York City, and then a certificate in family therapy in 1995 from the Ackerman Institute for the Family. He has maintained a private practice in New York City since 1985, specializing in family and couples therapy. He supervises graduate students in clinical psychology at Lenox Hill Hospital on their family therapy cases and teaches family therapy to graduate students at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. In 2022, he joined the board of the Ackerman Institute.
