This workshop aims to help practitioners understand the world of seniors (ages 60+) who find themselves alone through divorce or loss of a spouse/ long term partner, but who continue to desire intimate relationships and sex. Many seniors may have been “off the market” for years or even decades and be intimidated by modern conceptualizations about relationships and sex. Participants will learn that despite the enormous size of the aging Baby Boomer population, their intimacy needs are often overlooked, misunderstood or dismissed by a youth obsessed culture.

Core issues that seniors face when dating, engaging in sexual relationships and getting the support of medical professionals regarding sexual challenges will be discussed. The presenter will guide participants to identify agist biases and beliefs that may interfere with treatment. The presenter will outline strategies to assist seniors with dating online and offline, and managing sexual relationships in a modern world.

Learning Objectives:

  • To review societal assumptions and misconceptions about aging seniors who are single
  • To identify ageist biases and beliefs that may interfere with successful treatment
  • To outline strategies to help seniors navigate modern dating and sex
