In Memory of Evan Imber-Black

Dear Ackerman Community,

Evan Imber-Black

It is with great sadness that we share with you that our friend and colleague Evan Imber-Black, PhD, passed away early May 30th. She has influenced generations of family therapists through her teaching, training, and scholarship and she will be sorely missed.

Evan was a longtime faculty member at the Ackerman Institute and former Director of Ackerman’s Center for Families and Health. She was the Editor of Family Process, the major scholarly journal in family systems research and family therapy from 2004–2011. Throughout her internationally recognized career, Evan made major contributions in thematic areas that cut across different models of practice, including families and larger systems, family rituals, and family secrets. She is the author of over 75 original papers, and several books, including: The Secret Life of Families (Bantam, 1998), Secrets in Families and Family Therapy (WW Norton, 1993), Rituals for Our Times, co-authored with Janine Roberts (Jason Aronson, 1998).

We will miss Evan’s strength, her brilliant mind, her determination, and her care.

Sincerely,

The Family at Ackerman
